Academic Counseling
The counseling program at César Chávez Middle School is based on the belief that counseling should be an integral part of students’ daily educational environment and that school counselors are partners in student achievement. César Chávez has two full time counselors who work with both seventh and eighth grade students. The counselors are a resource to all students and families and can provide information and assistance that promotes academic achievement, career planning, and personal/social development. On academic related issues, the counselors provide support and guidance to students. The counselors review and monitor student’s grades, test scores, and teacher recommendations to ensure that each student is placed in the appropriate classes and receives the academic assistance they need to be successful.
Throughout the year, the counselors frequently meet with families, students, and teachers to discuss concerns regarding a student’s academic and or social progress. Together, they develop a plan to help the student reach their goals. The counselors also facilitate the transition from elementary school to middle school and in two short years, the transition from middle school to high school. In the spring, the seventh grade counselor works closely with the elementary schools to prepare the students and families for middle school.
Campus tours are planned, and families are invited to César Chávez’s Spring Open House to visit our classrooms and talk with our teachers. The eighth grade counselor works closely with the high school counselors to inform students and families about the programs our high schools have to offer and the current graduation requirements. The counselor also helps to prepare the students for college.
The counselors are available as a resource to help students with their emotional needs as well. César Chávez is fortunate enough to have two counseling agencies on campus, Tiburcio Vasquez and The Our Kids Program. The counselors coordinate the delivery of the support services to our students and families and help to create a safe and nurturing environment so that our students will thrive.
We encourage parents to stay active in the educational process by monitoring and praising your child’s academic efforts. Together we can help your child have a positive middle school experience that will pave the way for a brighter future.
